New Ruins - Melbournehttp://www.emerged.net/newruins/ New Ruins showcased new site-specific work by contemporary artists from Australia and the UK, as they responded to the unique city centre site of Melbourne’s former City Watch House.
The Shelter of Broken Wings A new sculptural piece for the Watch Tower in Melbourne, based on the Glasgow phenomenon of the ‘doocot’ – an urban dovecote structure often discovered in lonely areas of social neglect. The work will exploit the rituals of the doocot’s construction and (often violent) deconstruction, using this large-scale object with its overtones of ambivalent anonymity and threatening presence as an unlikely contemporary metaphor for hope. The sculpture did not reproduce the pre-existing structures, but echoed their idiosyncratic components of corrugated iron, doors, handles, and stairs to develop a form that reflected a local social orientation and an international metaphorical and political signification.
