For Glasgow International, E m e r g e D have commissioned Jonathan Scott, an emerging artist who divides his time between Paris and Glasgow, to produce an ambitious new work for a sometime orphaned space in the city centre. Unused and previously seldom seen, the site will provide a decadent context for Scott’s reflections on the emergence of grotesque consciousness through constructed moments latent with an inexplicable air of carnival.
Operating out-with the conventional gallery system, E m e r g e D, through Face of an Angel, Voice of a Demon, will engage diverse new audiences in a fresh and challenging dialogue with the dynamic potential of contemporary visual art. Developed in response to the site, Scott’s newest installation will frame a narrative suggestion of charged conflict. Though often brutal, the antagonism which Scott laces through his practice opens significant questions of relational aesthetics through his compositional dialogue, its underlying pivot balancing the formal with the cognitive.
Scott’s temporary intervention into this non-conventional site will showcase the breadth of platforms used to exhibit cutting edge contemporary practices to the multivarious audience of Glasgow International. In exploiting these contexts – both physical and non-physical - as points of departure, Scott will consider his subject matter of Trauma as a phenomenon both real and fantastic. Challenging its audience through a continual engagement with the critical investigation of scenarios and propositions. Face of an Angel, Voice of a Demon maintains a concise visual language through which to articulate its sometimes bloody concerns.
